PREFACE

Having  got benefit of Solar Power Generation installation in my house in Bengaluru and freedom from paying monthly bills since March 17, 2017 a thought came to my mind as to why others should not  enjoy the benefits.

This thought gave birth to two voluntary projects:

1.   Spread awareness to use solar energy which is available in plenty and in
abundance for us.    Started with an awareness session in a Rotary Club
in Chennai Chennai on January 13, 2019.   More such meetings are
in pipeline.   Currently looking for volunteers who can help me in
in spreading awareness in their own locations. All presentation materials,
facts and figures and backup materials can be provided on line.

2.   Take up voluntary projects by which we all can help others to an extent
possible:  For example, visit a village where people still predominantly use
kerosene oil and encourage them to use solar lights.   In order to avoid giving
away anything totally free, negotiate for a good brand with say five year
warranty at steep discount; and encourage the villagers to buy paying a small
price directly from the vendor - or help the villagers to obtain supplies if they
so desire - and help them stop spending money on buying kerosene.

Project No.1 was started based on my own experience with solar power generation installation and tracking performance for nearly 20 months now.

Similarly, second project can also be launched once I buy and try a product for say a week or so.

The purpose of this blog is to invite like-minded volunteers for these two projects and for any new projects we may launch based on suggestions/recommendations
of the Group.

The projects are voluntary and do not have any other motive.

  2. Solar energy is available in abundance as rightly said by Shri Narayanan swami. Now the technology is also upgraded to cater individual houses / places one can enjoy the power cut free electricity and also earn money from supply the excess power generation to grid.

    1. In the absence of your email id, or name, I am replying here. I suppose you are talking of Hybrid systems with battery storage. My personal preference is grid supported netmetering concept. Again, all states do not offer facility to earn money from excess
      production.

  3. Thanks for sharing and taking the initiative. Could you give indicative costs for installing solar power for houses/flats. Based on this info, I could work out a strategy to promote from my end.

    2. Approx 70K one time all inclusive for producing 150 units(1 kva installation) in a month. If you share your email id and your location, I can give you more details. A shadow free space of 100 sq.ft per kva on the terrace Is prerequisite for the best solution I recommend. For flats, look at going in for common facilities such as lift, stairs lights, etc. to start with. (Once again apologies for delay. I normally respond very fas. But your message missed my attention).

  4. I had been consuming approximately around 1100 to 1200 units at my house on plot of size 30' east west * 50' north south orientation (ground + two floors + terrace having kitchen and two rooms). I had reconstructed in 2006 June. The electric sanctioned load is spread over 4 electric metres (3 were with 3 kW each sanctioned load and one of 2 HP sanctioned load ie approximate sanctioned load is 10.5 kW. Out of this 4 metres, 3 metres (2 of 3 kW each & 1 of 2 HP) were commercial and 1 of 3 KW was domestic). At that time My ekectric bill used to be around Rs 6000.00 per month. I realised that with electric tariff going up every year by approx 10 to 12 % every year, I would paying a bomb after sometime. Hence I did these things to reduce the Power consumption
    1) increased my solar hot water system capacity to 800 litres from 300 litres. This made me eliminate all geysers from my building (there are 27 people staying there).
    2) Changed all the 23 conventional ceiling fans to BLDC technology ceiling fans
    3) changed all tube lights and CFL lamps to LED lamps
    4) replaced my 350 litre capacity 20 year old no frost refrigerator with a 214 litre capacity direct cooling refrigerator
Doing all these changes about 31/2 years back, I found that my electric consumption has dropped to between 675 to 725 units per month for last three years.
I have now decided to instal a 10 KW ongrid netmetering photovoltaic systems. I have selected a vendor and have given him the order to execute the same.
Besides this I also want to share a simple water management system which I Operate at my house by which I am reusing approximately 80000 to 90000 litres per month of water for flushing the toilets thereby saving about 80000 litres of clean drinking water per month from being used for flushing. See the below message with link
Why don't u try this also
Think of using and reusing and recycling resources to an extent they cannot be reused by u and a specialist only can recycle or refurbish for further use. I do similar thing as far as water is concerned.
Do we really want this stage in our life for us as well as for our future generations that v struggle for water? If not, then it is time for us to take over and tackle the issues concerning our present and future life in what best way we can in any small way we can do.
My intention is to make people aware that these can be done by everyone. Unfortunately we have been spoilt by getting this resource at a very highly subsidised rates which makes take this resource for granted. People do not understand that not more than 2% of water is available for sustenance of our life even though the planet is having 75% water and it is becoming difficult every day to get access to this 2% also.
Hence I put across very enthusiasm this message of effective use of this resource
Use resources to such an extent that you cannot use further and then send for recycling as explained in below link
    http://www.thebetterindia.com/95042/simple-plumbing-hacks-helped-bengaluru-family-cut-water-bills-half/.
I recycle 80000 to 90000 litres of grey water per month for flushing toilets thereby saving minimum 80000 litres of pure drinking water per month
Using since October 2006. Hence during last 150 months 80000*150= 12000000 litres drinking water has been saved. Another plus point- load on sewage treatment plant is also reduced by 80000 litres per month. Just imagine if every house practices this how much drinking water will be saved and how much the sewage treatment plant will work.

U can also come and see the system working along with your contacts. You can share the same with your other contacts

    2. I compliment you for the steps you have taken. I hope you have already installed solar power generation. In our place we recycle water and use it for watering plants.
I am of the strong opinion that bill for electricity must stop (my own personal estimate - not official - is we are wasting 30 lakh crores of rupees a month collectively - generation after generation. In most of the States this wastage can be stopped within a month or so.
Today my presentations include four voluntary projects to create awareness :

1, Install Solar Power Generation and stop paying for electricity. As a bye-product we reduce carbon footprint by planting 3020 e-trees for a 5 kva (700 units) installation.
      2. Make water from air. Located one machine. But still looking for solar powered machine. Humidity needed 50% plus.
      3. Encourage economically handicapped to use solar lamps - located one at last - at Rs. 2700 each (made in India) with 2 year warranty and 5 year lithium battery life.
      4. Produce cooking gas from food waste.

Will be happy to share details if required.
      With kind regards, Narayan Bengaluru

P.S.I have two successes so far (I am not concerned about vendor selection) - one gated community in Bengaluru (35 kva); one individual house in Pune (3 kva). Just now when I heard that Egypt is planning to increase electricity tariff by 5% from July 2019.
my friend in Cairo has started negotiation for installing a 20 kva in Cairo. I am finding it a privilege to address Rotary Clubs, Lions, Gated Communities, Schools, Worship places etc. in addition to broadcasts in facebook.

  5. I am glad Awareness on the benefits of Roof Top Solar Power Generation is improving. I get opportunites to present to Rotary Clubs, Gated Communities, Resident Welfare Associations etc..
